This drill is about control and balance. When swimming your arms want to be parallel to each other out in front of your body, entering in line with each shoulder. This drill helps you bring control by pausing as you are just about to enter your hand into the water. Hold it until you need to breathe in then breathe to the opposite side. The goal is to enter your finger tips roughly half way between the wrist and elbow of your opposite arm, smoothly spearing into the water. Think of it as posting a letter and your hand is the letter, its has to enter at the correct angle else you will smush the letter. Aim to do this drill as slowly and smoothly as you can to bring control to your stroke.
